Raise Cumbria Named Forest of the Year for Inclusive Woodland Creation

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news: Raise: Cumbria Community Forest has been awarded Forest of the Year by England’s Community Forests! This recognition highlights Raise’s inclusive and community-focused approach to woodland creation, setting a benchmark for sustainable forestry in the UK.

Arbortec Forestwear: Proud to Partner with Raise

At Arbortec Forestwear, we’re proud to support Raise and their inspiring work. Their recognition as Forest of the Year proves that collaboration and inclusivity are key to tackling climate change and building a sustainable future. Congratulations to the entire Raise team!

At the Community Forests Conference in York, the award was given in recognition of Raise’s innovative and collaborative approach to creating woodlands that benefit both people and nature.

“Being recognised as Forest of the Year is a huge honour for our small team,” said Raise Director, James Cobbold. “It’s also a credit to the people we work alongside here in Cumbria – from farmers and foresters to community partners and volunteers. This is a collective achievement.”

Why Raise Stood Out: Inclusive Woodland Creation

Raise was recognised for its guiding principles, which make it a leader in community-driven woodland design:

  • Increasing access to nature for everyone
  • Designing woodlands with and for local communities
  • Championing neurodivergent perspectives
  • Supporting biodiversity and nature recovery
  • Creating long-term partnerships with farmers and landowners

These values have allowed Raise to go beyond tree planting, creating meaningful green spaces that improve health, wellbeing, and biodiversity across Cumbria.

Making an Impact: Over 330,000 Trees Planted

Since launching in 2022, Raise has helped plant more than 330,000 trees across Cumbria. In 2025, the Raise Forest Plan was formally adopted by Cumberland Council and approved by the Lake District National Park Authority, setting a long-term vision for tree cover expansion, habitat restoration, and woodland accessibility.

This commitment ensures that Cumbria will see thriving forests and connected green spaces for generations to come.

Part of a National Effort for Greener Futures

Raise is part of England’s Community Forests, a national network dedicated to creating healthier, greener spaces near towns and cities. In the 2024–25 season, the network achieved its biggest milestone yet, planting over 2,500 hectares of woodland across England.
