The Ultimate Chainsaw Trousers Guide for Beginners
Selecting the appropriate chainsaw trousers is critical based on the specific task, as leg injuries are the most prevalent type of chainsaw related harm. At Arbortec we offer a range of chainsaw trousers tailored to various arboricultural industries & beyond.
Understanding Chainsaw Trouser Class
Each pair of Arbortec chainsaw protective trousers will be defined by EN ISO 11392-2:2019 with one of 3 classifications.
The classification will be indicated by a pictogram on the product (shown below) and adheres to requirements which have been set in the framework of the European standards.
- Class 1 - Protection against chainsaw speeds up to 20 m/s
- Class 2 - Protection against chainsaw speeds up to 24 m/s
- Class 3 - Protection against chainsaw speeds up to 28 m/s

Understanding Chainsaw Trouser Designs
Once the required classification is established based upon the chainsaw in use, the situation and environment can then be considered for overall leg protection. Leg protection is available in three forms:
- Design A: Provides frontal protection with coverage extending 5 cm to the back. Suitable for professional loggers engaged in standard forest harvesting, who are well-trained and follow strict safety protocols.
- Design A Plus: Enhances the standard Design A by adding calf protection to the back half of the leg, offering 180° protection.
- Design C: Offers full leg protection, ensuring comprehensive safety for more demanding forestry and arborist tasks.

Understanding UL Rating
Chainsaw trousers sold in North America must comply with UL certification standards-ASTM F1897-20 for the United States and ASTM F3325-20 for Canada. These define the level and placement of leg protection, with variations between the two countries.
In the USA, UL-certified trousers provide frontal protection with partial side coverage and are available in two design options. In Canada, the standard includes four design classes, offering broader and more specific protection.
- USA/ CANADA: ASTM F1897-20, ASTM F3325-C, ASTM 3325-D
- CANADA ONLY (IN ADDITION): ATSM F3325-A, ATSM F3325-B
